Top Red vs. Boroughs United

There was an aura of disappoint from the Borough united players in regards last week’s draw against Wenlock. The gaffer in his pre match talk told the players they must move on and learn a lesson from that game. The team welcomed Charlie a new goalkeeper who was making his debut. Charlie wasted no time introducing himself to the players, a confident character it seemed liked he had already been with the squad for a while. The game kicked off 30 minutes late because the referee showed up late, just before Boroughs and Top Red were about to assign squad members to ref a half each.

When the game kicked off, in typical Borough fashion they pressed the opposition and were immediately in control of the game.  Boroughs created some good chances and were a constant threat at the opposition’s goal. The game was being played just as the gaffer wanted it, quick passing football. Clem (CB) stepped into the centre back position in the absence of club captain Michael Goodwin. Jordan Alabaster had to come off after picking up a knock when he clashed with the Boroughs goalkeeper. Top Red had their chances as they constantly threatened on the right hand side. With good communication Boroughs were able shut the door on that particular path to their goal. The Borough defence had a few shaky moments but kept it solid with the help of new signing Charlie who was pivotal with his commands from the back.

Mid way through the second half Frost was charging towards the opposition goal chasing a through ball from Romeo, he brushed off the defenders challenge, while off balance he rounded the keeper and passed the ball into the back of the net. The score at half time 0-1 to Boroughs.

CJ (CM) replaced Lenny and Fred slotted in the right back position after playing centre mid after Jordan’s first half injury. Dayo (CM) also had to come off early  in the second half with a reoccurring ankle injury, Keeron replaced him.

Boroughs were creating many chances and were flowing with their passing. It was not long before Boroughs extended their lead. Fred lofted a ball over the oppositions defence to Ashley (RM) who then ran down the line and crossed it in as Frost beat the keeper to claim his second of the game. Fred was constantly putting in dangerous balls into the box, on this particular occasion he lofted one in which flew pass the keeper who was standing off his line. Boroughs were up 3-0 and were cruising, they made it four when Frost chased a through ball, again he used his strength rounded the keeper only to hit the post but the ball was then bundled in by the oppositions defender. Frost claimed it, and it was a hatrick for the Borough attacker.

Boroughs midfield were controlling the game and moving the ball quickly around the opposition’s midfield. Top Red had a late consolation goal deep into the second half from a free kick which was headed in by the attacker who out jumped the Borough defence. Boroughs were not finished yet as Denzle broke on the left; he accelerated beyond the Top Red right back and passed the ball to Keeron, who drilled it in low and hard. 1-5 was the final score as Boroughs get back to winning ways.

Man of the match with an impressive display from start to finish was David Frost.

Big thank you to Kristian for capturing the footage for us to put on our website.

Boroughs United vs Wenlock

Match day 2 and Boroughs were planning to win their second league game of the season. Boroughs started on the front foot and created many chances but were not clinical in front of goal. Boroughs were off the pace and could not find the rhythm to their game. Wenlock were putting up a fight and refused to let Boroughs dictate the game. Due to the lack of fluidity in Boroughs passing game Wenlock were growing in confidence. Against the run of play Wenlock took the lead. Borough quickly responded just before half time as Denzle rounded the keeper for a tap in.

Second half started and it was the same story, bad decisions which led to possible goal scoring chances being nullified by Wenlock getting back into shape. With perseverance Boroughs took the lead with an overhead kick by Frost. With less than 10 minutes to go Boroughs conceded a penalty, which was scored. Throughout the game Boroughs stand in keeper Romeo was catching the ball effortlessly and making great saves, normally an outfield player he decided to step up as Ade would be ruled out for 4 weeks with a wrist injury. Boroughs had one last push to try and score the winner but they could not break through. The final score 2-2.

Man of the match with an outstanding performance in goal was Michael Romeo.

Football Club 22 vs Boroughs United

Overall Boroughs have enjoyed a good preseason campaign winning two out of the three games they have played plus all the hard work that was done in training. First Sunday in September, Boroughs first league game of the new season. The team knew that this was the time to perform; the most important thing for the team was to bring home the 3 points that were on the line.

Straight from the kick off Boroughs were on the front foot, an interception by the Boroughs midfield created an opening for Romeo (LM) to run down the line and whip a dangerous ball in. Football club 22 were slowly gaining confidence and were making strides away from their half as Boroughs kept them pinned back. Not long after Denzle (RM) broke with the ball on the right, beat his man and squared the ball to David Frost (CF) who smashed the ball passed the goal keeper with his right foot.

Boroughs midfielders were having good possession of the ball and were controlling the game. Dayo and Jordan both (CM)’s both over 6 feet were winning everything in the air in the middle of the park. Michael (CB) continues to use his strength to ease the opposition of the ball, at one point a slight nudge with is shoulders sent the opposition player flying in the air.

Football club 22 refused to be kept in their half and were slowly becoming a threat, their persistence paid off as Boroughs did not close the attacker down early enough allowing him to take shot from 25 yards, Ade (GK) got his hands to it but the power was too much.

1-1, Boroughs knew they needed to wake up and play their game. Boroughs lead was quickly reinstated with another wonder strike from Jordan (CM). Unlike his efforts from the previous week, this was a looping shot which over the keeper. Boroughs were now in the mood and made it 3-1, Emeka’s long throw was flicked on by Romeo (LM) Frost was there to receive the ball and collect his second goal of the game. The score was 3-1 at half time.

The second half was more of an even game, the opposition were attacking with more intent, but the Boroughs defence were in control of the situation. Several must win slide tackles were made by Emeka as the attackers were running towards Boroughs goal. Due to one of those tackles an opposition player was taken off the pitch, eventually an ambulance stationed at the Marshes had to come to his aid. Boroughs were looking lethargic during periods of that second half. Jason (LB) attempted a cross field pass which was intercepted by the striker, Emeka tried to reclaim the ball but gave away a free kick. The free kick was scored and it was now 3-2.

The pressure was on, three subs were made as all three players that came off, did so as a precaution to possible injuries. The ball broke on the right; Lenny (RB) crossed the ball to the back post which was met by the flying head of Keeron (AM). An assist and a goal by both subs. Clem (CM) some made some crucial tackles in the middle putting a stop to the opposition attempts to attack. Romeo was fouled in the box and the referee pointed to the spot, it was a chance for Frost to claim a hatrick but the penalty was saved by the keeper’s foot.

The pressure was off Boroughs and they finished the game with a fifth goal, a corner which was lofted into the front post was looped in acrobatically by Keeron, who scored two good goals as a sub.

The man of the match as voted for by the players  with a very good performance, worked hard and was a constant problem for the opposition defence was David Frost.

Boroughs United [5] vs [2] City Flyers

Nets

A tradition of Sunday league football no one looks forward to is putting up the net and taking down the net. On this particular day it took 10 Boroughs United players to put up the net, rather than put the net up how they normally do, they decided to copy our opposition and take down the whole goal down and struggled to put it back up.  Thankfully the team’s abilities are better on the pitch than on putting up the nets.

Boroughs opposition were City Flyers who were recently crowned champions of  Division 3 in the Hackney and Leyton league. This game would have greater significance to our preseason preparation because it would give us an indication of what level we need to be at to be competitive in that same division. Boroughs could boast a big squad of 17, as most players were available for selection. After the team talk by Emeka, the team were confident and ready to go.

The first ten minutes were cagey as both teams were feeling each other out. Boroughs were pressing high and defending as a unit. A long throw by Emeka (CB) was met by the side foot of CJ (CF) who hit the cross bar. Not long after Romeo (CM) put Boroughs in the lead with a header. The ball was floated into the box; Rumesh (LW) controlled it and put it back in the danger area for Romeo to head it in.

Boroughs lead did not last long as City equalised straight away, some poor defending led to their goal. A simple through ball in behind the two centre backs, Emeka slow to react to the run after being warned by Michael (CB).The striker was ruthless in his finish as he gave the defenders no time to recover.

Heads never went down as Boroughs knew they could beat City, they pressed and pressed and kept up with their quick passing game. Boroughs soon took a 2-1 lead when Jordan(CM) smashed the ball from 30 yards to beat the City keeper who was caught off guard.  Boroughs kept the pressure up and soon made it 3. An assist by Denzle (RW) and a good finish by Rumesh. At this point City were still looking for that same ball that got them their first goal but to no avail. Rumesh stole the ball of the City right back and charged towards the goal where the keeper came off his line and took him out. The penalty was converted by Denzle to make it 4-1 at half time.

Wholesale changes were made by Emeka at half time to give minutes to all players who were fighting to make the 14 man squad for the start of the season. Boroughs were less effective going forward with all the changes and conceded a second goal. Another through ball managed to get to the City striker; he stuck the ball cleanly to beat the keeper with power and accuracy. Boroughs managed to see the game out and get a fifth. It was started at the back via route one, launching the ball to the attacking players. Frost (CF) who managed to find space for himself tucked the ball into the back of the net. The game ended 5-2 in favour of Boroughs.

A very good win against a very good opposition, no one at the club will get complacent and think we have achieved something, it will be a good confidence boost but it is only the start and there is a long season ahead in which every member of the squad will play their part. Players will respect each opposition and fight to win every game.
